These Turkeys are filled with a natural vigor, vitality, are winter hearty and provide an excellent quality of meat. They mate naturally and are disease resistant. The meat has a full delicious taste range, not
like the industrial, mass produced, white turkeys you find in most grocery stores. If you've never eaten a Heritage Turkey now is a good time to try one. Conventional supermarket turkeys can be tastless and dry. They are raised in captivity, given growth hormones and antibiotic additives in their feed and grow to market size in 12-14 weeks. Whereas our Heritage Turkeys are woodland raised, free range, and fed non-GMO feeds. The birds take 28-30 weeks to reach a marketable weight (hens 7-10 lbs, and Toms 12-16 lbs) and are juicy and succulent. They develop a thin layer of naturally occuring healthy fat rich in omega-3 under the skin at 6-7 month old which actually makes them "self basting."
Here at Mickey and Ann's Farmette we maintain our own breeders and keep the Turkeys protected in a 1/4 acre fenced in area which is also watched over by our Great Pyrenees, Xena.
Interesting note: In the 1500's Spanish explorers took some wild North American Turkeys back to Europe and domesticated them. Then European colonists brought these breeds, what we know as Heritage back to North America in the 1600's.
